Truk

Chuuk is world renowned for its rich World War II history as can be seen in the wreck-based dive sites that are scattered throughout Truk Lagoon.  In fact, the lagoon is reported to have the most sunken wrecks in the world.  Consisting mainly of war-based wreckages from over six decades ago, the dives in Truk Lagoon can be very mysterious as well as beautiful.  The hulls of the wrecked vessels are now overrun with colourful coral, as well as anemonies and crinoids.  Among the multiple wrecks, some sites are more noteworthy than others.  For instance, beginners and advanced divers alike will delight in exploring the Fujikawa Maru, a 7,000 tonne warship that now rests, even keel, at the bottom of the lagoon.  Points of interest may include the intact deck guns, as well as several fighter planes still found in the hold, relatively undamaged.  Another astonishing sight is the hull of the San Francisco Maru.  Often referred to as the “Million Dollar Wreck”, this cargo vessel was scuttled with a full load of cargo including everything from mines and torpedoes to tanks.  Explore the deck guns as well as the hold, now covered in soft coral and infested with colourful parrot fish.
